Got to admit ive run gnome that packaged with sarge 3.1 and have had not one lockup/crash since I started using it. Never had previous problems like your describing before either.
I find kde very system resourceful and relys a lot on qt etc to have things working... Im not faulting kde...just not my cup of tea -----Original Message----- From: Ognjen Bezanov [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 02 December 2005 14:16 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Help to install graphical environment on Hyundai 255KI 15. I have been using gnome for the last 5 years, and frankly I have decided to switch because of its bugginess. I lived with it until I borrowed a friends laptop with KDE, and used it for a few months without a single major issue. Under gnome I am constantly having nautilus lockup and requiring an entire reboot of the system to fix. This issue has existed on five different systems (three Desktops. two laptops) under 3 different linux distros (debian, gentoo and fedora) of which one was not installed by me. Its a shame though, because I prefer the way gnome looks to KDE, I just wish they would fix this bug Oh, and Ubuntu was the only linux distro where I didnt have an issue with gnome, well done guys! >-----Original Message----- >From: Andrew Perrin [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] >Sent: 02 December 2005 13:24 >To: Rodolfo Medina >Cc: debian-laptop >Subject: Re: Help to install graphical environment on Hyundai 255KI 15. > >What happens when you type startx? > >As for using kde instead of gnome, try apt-get install kde kde-core > >ap > >On Fri, 2 Dec 2005, Rodolfo Medina wrote: > > > >>Hi. >> >>I don't manage to install a graphical environment on my >>Hyundai 255KI 15, Debian Sarge 3.1 stable. >>After the base installation I did: >> >> # apt-get install gdm gnome >> >>, but no graphical environment will start, neither with: >> >> $ startx >> >>nor with: >> >> $ gnome-session >> >>.
