Got to admit ive run gnome that packaged with sarge 3.1 and have had not one lockup/crash since I started using it. Never had previous problems like your describing before either.
I find kde very system resourceful and relys a lot on qt etc to have things working... Under gnome I am constantly having nautilus lockup and requiring an entire reboot of the system to fix. This issue has existed on five different systems (three Desktops. two laptops) under 3 different linux distros (debian, gentoo and fedora) of which one was not installed by me.
