According to what is written at the bottom of this page

the 3D-acceleration is indeed not supported for the Radeon 9600 by xorg
6.9. You could try to select the r200 driver.
On that page there is also given a link where to download the ATI binary
driver. How to use this package with debian is described, e.g., here:
http://xoomer.virgilio.it/flavio.stanchina/debian/fglrx-installer.html
But I have not this ATI chip and not tested the procedure.
