Yes, I've setup something along this line. I`m running wmaker solo session but with a single click, can have nautilus desktop plus my gnome panel. This is running with wmaker as window manager, then. I also have to start the (gtk-2) gnome-settings-daemon myself, in this case. I don't know if gnome session management requires any more daemons, afaics nautilus launches anything necessary automatically, but anyway, this can be done altogether by a wrapper script, which can be launched by a wmaker desktop icon on demand, or (preferred) by the wmaker autostart feature at x-session launch time.
Dan Davison <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: | process, I chose to have a desktop environment. However I would really | like to have the choice to quit out of gnome (or never enter it) I ditched the display (login) manager, and just login with username (no password) on textconsole....much faster. Sometimes i just need no X. After login, users face a nice colored textconsole menu to start x-session, suspend, enter the shell on tty, or shutdown. It's easy to extend. Things are done via 'sudo' so you can finetune any permissions. | different window manager, when I want. wmaker once offered to switch to another WM on the fly. wmaker menus can easily be customized, and it should still be possible to switch. | I have the .xsession file from my Yes, i had to tweak this a little to make it work, of course. Also the profile script which is run after PAM login ( .profile or .bash_profile, on debian) to call the chooser menu script. | old debian system that sets up an X session with the ion window manager, | and I would like to be able to choose between using gnome and using ion. I don't know ion, but perhaps you have a look at wmaker too ? It offers nearly full desktop capability in a very smart (unusual) way. You can have anything `iconified' and there are lots of 'dock-apps', the dock is just a freaky kind of 2d-panel. Unfortunately, i'm offline for the next 2 weeks, but if you like we can draw back on it later. Since this stuff isn't exactly laptop related, i suggest we shift this to private mail, in case you are interested.
