The enabled kdm password is only beneficial for the case that the laptop is unattended *and* powerd on *and* sitting at kdm's login prompt. This would almost never be the case for my laptop, so I have long disabled the login password. FWIW, (less than stone old) Thinkpads have the reputation that it is rather difficult, if not practically impossible, to break the bios password.
