since some update the gnome-volume-manager does not work anymore.
I have the same problem (after last upgrade in sid) and I notice that in
system -> control-center -> removable drives ... there is nothing for
CDROM or DVD.
I installed usbmount and now I can only mount automatically the usb mass
storage ...
fortunately mount and umount work fine :-)
