The message seems to be coming from avahi:

Does this mean that I need to reconfigure only avahi?

apparently your or the connected network's domain name (used in search list)
is .local

The issue is that .local domain is used by (Avahi) zeroconf and has a
special use so it's not recommended to use by network setups.

change the domain name used to something else (I won't tell you what,
there's no reserved TLD for local usage)
