Hello,

according to the release notes, if you were using an ATI card, the
proprieatary drivers do not work with some desktop environments, such as
Gnome, if I recall correctly, and Gnome requires a 3D capable card to
work.  Could something like this be the issue?

Take a look at the release notes issues [1] or information on how to
prepare the upgrade [2], just in case the cause of your problem is stated
there
