This is indeed a problem, but I looked at it for a while and I'm not
sure that it's fixable. The problem is that we generate the list of
strings in the binary using the program strings, which doesn't have a
mode for picking up UTF-8-encoded strings.

It currently lacks the -f option, which is required by Lintian. If you
were interested in adopting u8strings in Lintian, I'd happy to add this
option.
