Dear Lintian maintainers,

I am attempting to override 3 instances of spelling-error-in-binary. One is an intentional misspelling used as an example and the other two can't be changed for API reasons.

When using lintian-override syntax like:

> zoitechat binary: spelling-error-in-binary teh the

Lintian returns:

> W: zoitechat: mismatched-override spelling-error-in-binary teh the [usr/share/lintian/overrides/zoitechat:2]
> X: zoitechat: spelling-error-in-binary teh the [usr/bin/zoitechat:1]

If I include the whole contents of the brackets, including the line number:

> zoitechat binary: spelling-error-in-binary teh the [usr/bin/zoitechat:1]

Lintian accepts the override:

> N: intentional typo as example for autoreplace function
> O: zoitechat: spelling-error-in-binary teh the [usr/bin/zoitechat:1]

If I include the path in brackets without the line number, I get the former behaviour.

In the Lintian manual [1] it clearly states that "What's inside brackets is optional and may be omitted if you want to match it all." But it's apparently not optional in my case.

I confirmed this on my own workstation, in sbuild, and on a clean sid VM. You can clone the https://salsa.debian.org/sney/zoitechat repo and see for yourself by editing d/zoitechat.lintian-overrides as described above.

Is this a new change, and the manual needs updating? Or is it a bug in lintian?

Thanks for your work,

sney
