Damn small linux is GPL'd... there may be another solution (I am planning for Feather Linux)

Here is a possible solution...

(i am not sure what you mean by persistent home dir.. so if i am repeating something just ignore me)

When you boot from usb, why not use another partition in place of the ramdisk?

So when the rootfs is mounted... make it so changes are written to another partition (or filesystem in the form as a file) on the usb device.. not to ram.

Because of the limited number of writes on flash devices, /proc and so on should be on ramdisk...

I am not 100% sure if the current casper could handle this... but perhaps a small/simple patch would make it possible.

I was thinking, I am a bit cold about having a
persistent home directory on my usb stick. I'd like to
have a more low-tech backup/restore script a-la
Damnsmalllinux, but I can't use that one as the
licence is not clear.

I was thinking of BACKUP2L:
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/admin/backup2l

We could build upon that and customize it for a live
distro. What do you think?
