Note that xdebconfigurator depends on hwinfo, which does a better job than mdetect when detecting mouses. It can among other things detect scroll wheels. I'm not aware of any other obvious quality differences between the xorg postinst and xdebconfigurator. (On thin clients xdebconfigurator require smaller ramdisk space, but that is not very relevant here. :) I wish someone could pull out the mouse detection code from hwinfo and integrate it into mdetect.
