We have nice logs to look at[0] but they are many megabytes big! The relevant

I met this problem earlier today on another system. Further on in the
logs it seems like aptitude partially works around the problem, albeit
with a score of -39938, hence why you are getting a "somewhat" working
system. This also seems to be the cause of [1].
