I wouldn't follow this if I were you. It is very out of date. Look at the HOWTOs at http://wiki.debian.org/DebianLive instead. It tends to be kept up to date. For one thing, any config variable prefixed LIVE_ is from an older version of live-helper. All config variables are now prefixed LH_ instead.
