It's not clear to me what the cause or right solution is (preseeding, setting environment variables, ...). Are you running 2.6.22-6-386 on the host (build) system? If that's the source of the problem, then d-l should avoid this error. If the problem has to do with reinstalling the kernel package version/instance within the chroot, then I guess d-l should avoid that error too.
