if you want to do it properly (aka 'the debian way'), you rebuild a
debian kernel tree (completely), and build matching
linux-modules-extra-2.6 (with squashfs/aufs/unionfs only) for it.

however, for debian-live, you just need to make sure you have .deb
packages of that kernel, so even kernel-package (make-kpkg) is an
acceptable way of building the kernel images (don't forget that you need
an initrd, and also build, at least, the headers packages too for future
 use).
