I had problems installing the live-helper package to an etch system as well. I think the problem lies with the live.debian.net repo.
I found this in the wiki: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianLive/Configuration#line-37 but that will gets you jack-squat. I've tried using these in apt/sources.list: deb http://live.debian.net debian/ deb-src http://live.debian.net debian/ which will get me thus far: Running: apt-cache policy live-helper live-helper: Installed: (none) Candidate: 1.0~a46+20080428.181640 Version table: 1.0~a46+20080428.181640 0 500 http://live.debian.net debian/ Packages 1.0~a46-2 0 300 http://debian.mirrors.easynews.com sid/main Packages 1.0~a45-1 0 400 http://debian.mirrors.easynews.com lenny/main Packages but try pulling source and you'll get 404's: joey:~/projects/llnw/debs$ apt-get source live-helper Reading package lists... E: Failed to download live-helper I think the problem is that http://live.debian.net/debian/Packages has "Filename: ./live-helper_1.0~a46+20080428.181640_all.deb" instead of "Filename: debian/live-helper_1.0~a46+20080428.181640_all.deb" I run a similar style apt repo using the mini-dinstall program and that is how it forms its Filename: headers.
