You can avoid having to build d-i by patching the relevant file inside
the initrd whilst building your live image. If you check the sources
for Webconverger you can see one way of doing exactly this.
There is now a more elegant way of doing that in the most recent version
of live-helper by using the initrd include directory.
Saying that, building d-i is actually quite easy and painless. Ensuring
it is used is, IIRC, just a case of calling it the right thing in
chroot_binary-includes/.
