Thanks Diederik, Refering back to my op, the physical machine is running Debian Squeeze AMD64 > virtual box3.0> Debian Lenny 32 which is what I am trying to build on. Perhaps an explanation of what I am trying to build is in order. Due to recient advances in crimeware's abilities I am no longer sure I trust local machines for sensitive finical transatcions. By building a custom live cd that contains only a minimum amount of software and hardened is the best I can do for assurance that the system is safe. When these sensitive transactions need to take place one only needs to boot to the live cd. And yes I know about hardware viruses but the hardware the live cd will run on is to old to be infected by them. One thing I didn't mention before is that I installed the gui utility befor my second attempt and before the purge. It built an image but it was unbootable. It was at that point that I purged everything and tried to start over. I think I will delete the virtual host and reinstall it and really start form scratch.
