Why?
The answer given already was a reasonable one. Resizing a read-only
partition doesn't make any sense, as you couldn't actually do anything
with the extra space. But by adding a *writable* partition, now you can
make use of the added space.
What problem do you think you're solving by trying to avoid creating
another partition?
