Would it be much trouble for the livecd to display a list of detected hardware so the user could tweak the settings? For example, "Debian Live detected a generic monitor. If that is not true, click on Change Monitor and select the correct one from the list." More work to be sure, but I don't see any advantage to Debian when the potential user can't use Debian and selects another distribution.
