Try this: Edit the chroot file /etc/gdm/gdm.schemas:
    <schema>
      <key>daemon/AutomaticLoginEnable</key>
      <signature>b</signature>
      <default>false</default> <-- change for true
    </schema>

    <schema>
      <key>daemon/AutomaticLogin</key>
      <signature>s</signature>
      <default></default> <--add username
    </schema>
