Lighter in what sense? KDE 4 has a (meta-)package kde-plasma-netbook, which is at the 'same level' as kde-plasma-desktop, but then .... more suited to netbooks. Might be interesting in your case. KDE 4/plasma was made with various form factors in mind (besides desktop), unlike KDE 3.x which only targetted desktops. And probably also relevant in your use case, the 'infrastructure' (network-/power-management, etc) has changed/improved significantly from Lenny/KDE3 to Squeeze/KDE4. And in case you didn't know, KDE 3 is dead.
