in the section 'Configuration Files' in the live-config manpage, it implies that you should put environment variables in the configuration files (the environment variables are listed at the end of the 'Configuration Files' section).

after having re-read that section, it is indeed not obvious what the actual content of these files is. i'm going to clarify that now, thanks for bringing it up.
