Yeah, I just realised that it's actually 'gnome terminal' that's failing to load and not simply sh/dash/whatever (still relatively new to Linux & Debian), and googling shows a fair number of results about this across multiple distros. I'm rather busy and I can at least get to a terminal prompt via ctrl+alt+F2, so I'll put this to one side to investigate further later.
