Hello, I am trying to build a netboot image (squashfs) of Debian Wheezy with live-build which shall be used as nonpersistent remote bootable live-system. Everything worked fine so far. Now I want to try the PREEMPT patched linux-kernel installed by the metapackage "linix-image-rt-amd64" from the Debian repository. Building the image worked but I am not able to boot it on my testmachine. I got an error message "mount overlay on /root/ failed with option -o...". I found some conversation on the mailing list that state that there are problems with the overlay filesystem (aufs) and the rt-kernel. Does anybody have some more informations about the technical details or is there already a solution for this?
I also tried Jessie with the backported rt-kernel which didn't work, but stretch worked with the current rt-kernel (linux-image-4.4.0-1-rt-amd64) so it doesn't seem to be generally impossible. Having a look at the kernel configs the rt-kernel of wheezy hasn't set the "CONFIG_AUFS_FS" option while the stretch rt-kernel doesn't even list this option but has a option "CONFIG_OVERLAY_FS=m" set. If there is no solution to get the rt-kernel from the Debian repository to work in a netboot image, is it at least possible to use a custom build and PREEMPT patched kernel for Wheezy if I set these options?
