I do not remember exactly if I tried to check the testing previous time
(and right after that I had destroyed my Debian VM just with one command,
haha). I have just installed the t-coffee and t-coffee-examples
(12.00.7fb08c2-1) from debian repo to my (new) buster machine and the same
command (t_coffee -aln sproteases_small.cw_aln sproteases_small.muscle
sproteases_small.tc_aln -outfile combined_aln.aln) continues to fail.

I will take one more look at this today and write to the list if I find
nothing.
