I was to say: tgz'ed git trees are tgz'ed *git* trees, no
less no more.

This file holds the released state:

        https://www.gnumed.de/downloads/gnumed-versions.txt

Assuming uscan is regexing for "/\d\.\d/" I have renamed "1.9"
to "1.9rc".
