Let me know if my team can be of any help on this, e.g. if there's anything
we can do on the repository side in order to make things easier for
packaging.
I should say that we've been moving away from the previous system of a
behemoth wxPython application (which was particularly hard to install on
Linux distros) towards:
- more distinction between the psychopy *library* for running
experiments in the users' own virtual env(s) and psychopy *app*
("Standalone"
PsychoPy) which now has its own repo
<https://github.com/psychopy/psychopy-app>. This was largely so that
linux users, who more often just want the library, don't have to worry
about wxpython as a dependency but the app is still available if they do
- a complete rewrite of that wxpython app into electron/node, called
PsychoPy Studio, which is available to Linux users as an AppImage
(e.g. AppImage
for release 2026.2.4

but we could also talk about whether there are better ideas for
distributing that app. The Electron app works differently - it's really
easy for linux users to download and install and it then uses *uv* to
set up Python virtual environments as needed in the users' home directory
Suffice to say, none of the PsychoPy team are packaging experts, but we're
happy to help out with whatever can help to make this less painful
