Forwarding to debian-mentors; it didn't make it last time due to a silly typo. ----- Forwarded message from Colin Watson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ----- Date: Wed, 6 Dec 2000 00:33:17 +0000 From: Colin Watson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: ITP: binfmt-support -- Support for extra binary formats Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.5i Organization: riva.ucam.org X-Debbugs-Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist I discussed this package in <URL:http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-0004/msg00066.html>; I'd hoped that my NM application would go a lot more quickly than it has, so I haven't formally ITPed it until now. Package: binfmt-support Priority: optional Section: admin Installed-Size: 36 Maintainer: Colin Watson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Architecture: all Version: 1.0.2 Depends: perl5 Description: Support for extra binary formats The binfmt_misc kernel module, contained in versions 2.1.43 and later of the Linux kernel, allows system administrators to register interpreters for various binary formats based on a magic number or their file extension, and cause the appropriate interpreter to be invoked whenever a matching file is executed. Think of it as a more flexible version of the #! executable interpreter mechanism. . This package provides an 'update-binfmts' script with which package maintainers can register interpreters to be used with this module without having to worry about writing their own init.d scripts, and which sysadmins can use for a slightly higher-level interface to this module. I'm the author, the licence is GPL, and it's lintian-clean. The main limitation at the moment is the lack of Hurd compatibility, which will have to wait until I have time to get my Hurd system going properly. Packages are at <URL:http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~cjwatson/debian> (1.0.2 will be there shortly after I submit this bug report). I've Cc'd this message to debian-devel because I'm not yet a developer, and so I'm looking for a sponsor for this package. If anybody is interested and would contact me, it would be much appreciated.
