I don't think, I have 16GiB memory and double of it for a swap partition.

In the old days Linux kernel was able to kill any program if starting eating
more memory than it shall.I tried to play with ulimits but failed to make this
work as I expect. Help would be appreciated.

I tried with top but did not get clear suspicion. I'll try with gnome-system-
monitor.
