The digit in the library name

I see the trailing digit in some libraries' names, like libdca0 and 
libc6. I
wasn't able to find the purpose of them in the Debian Policy and the 
Debian
Developer Reference. Please point to the place in documentation where I 
can
learn about these digits and decide if I should to use it or not.
