Thank you Andrey and Matthew both for your replies. That makes a lot of sense. It did not occur to me to check the compiler optimization level as a suspect :-). I will work with upstream to devise a better check for atomics, and after confirming that it works as expected with different optimization levels, will request Alexandre to bump the opendht package to latest release.
