The update recommends compatible legacy companion fonts and adapts the existing aliases to put icon families after the selected named text family with inherited binding. Generic monospace preferences remain weak so icon fonts cannot replace normal text or Qt primary fonts. Incompatible/remapped icon-set limits are documented rather than claiming Unicode remapping through Fontconfig. Changes in debian/changelog: fonts-nerd-symbols (3.4.0+dfsg1-2) unstable; urgency=medium . * Recommend compatible Font Awesome and Material Design companion fonts. * Keep named text families first and inherit their binding for icon fallbacks, ahead of unrelated private-use glyphs. (Closes: #1149204) * Preserve generic monospace preferences and add Fontconfig/Qt regression checks for installed-package fallback behavior. Verification: - Fresh Debian unstable sbuild: successful; lintian: successful. - Source and binary builds, installed-package autopkgtest, and ten Fontconfig/actual offscreen Qt regression scenarios pass. - Published binary downloaded, checksums/signatures verified, installed, purged, and reinstalled in a fresh Debian runtime; all scenarios pass. - The original archive orig tarball is unchanged. - Published Mentors source signature and tarballs were verified against the signed release assets.
