Hi,
You may use the helper packages if you find it useful -- but
it certainly is not mandatory. I have a few debian directories
available at http://master.debian.org/~srivasta/; I am in the process
of adding a few updates, and moving them to www.debian.org
I prefer not to use the helper packages myself, since it
ensures that I understand the details of policy (I like doing that);
and I have a better understanding and control of how my packages are
constructed. I call it hand crafting my packages ;-)
