Typically your key is rendered useless when it expires - it's presumed that you knew what you were doing when you set the expiry, and would have changed the expiry if you'd wanted to keep using it. As a result, your old key will almost certainly not be trusted as a signature on your new key for the purposes of getting your new key into the keyring. So yes, basically you're back to hooplaville.
