Hello, many thanks for the suggestions. Faw helped me to figure out what was wrong. The (previously) undocumented trick (not at manpages) is that when using --exclude argument, one MUST completely and explicitly list files to be installed, and where to. One must not use dh_install --autodest and or default behaviour. The intended debian/rules file was even more tricky, as variables could not be used in manifest files. In such situation, the debian/rules must contain the rule invocation with inline variables. I updated the PkgSplit [0] with more details and explanations, for those interested. Regards.
