Instead of patching Makefile, you can override CFLAGS and CC by calling:
$(MAKE) CFLAGS=$(CFLAGS) CC=$(CC)
Also, please add a debian/watch and an Homepage to debian/control.
Moreover, you might want to fix the manpage for the "hyphen used as
minus sign" lintian warning.
