The one that grabbed my attention is the large list of patches applied to the upstream code (if we don't take into account the debian-specific ones 0x-debian-*). I also had a look at the FreeBSD port of dma [1] and it doesn't seem to be so heavily patched. So, it seems like either your colleague is missing something or you are just taking the chance to develop in debian/patches/ ;-) ... hence communicating and consulting your changes upstream would bring these improvements to more users and developers.
