There is one issue, though: By using ./configure directly you pass away
the chance of working with DEB_*_GNU_TYPE. Instead I would recommend
using

override_dh_auto_configure:
        dh_auto_configure -- --datadir=/var/lib/iptotal 
--sysconfdir=/etc/iptotal

And I hope with hat change I said enough about the package. :)
