Thanks for your advice. I would think people at emdebian interested in sponsoring a package would be watching this list too though, so I think I'll wait a bit before contacting them directly, and see if a sponsor manifests him-/herself here. I don't want to spread this request over several mailing lists unless it's absolutely necessary.
