Dear Paul, yes, when we use a Desktop menu file, I think that it should follow its specification, as for any format. In general, one can use the tool desktop-file-validate from the desktop-file-utils package to check if the file is correct. In the case of categories, that tool specifies that ‘values extending the format should start with "X-"’.
