It looks like you've identified quite some issues with the current package. I have pushed a few of those patches upstream; it's just that upstream is (slowly) getting ready for releasing 0.7.0 and the build is currently broken, otherwise I would package something a bit newer (0.6.2 is quite old!). I think the best course of action at this stage would be to work on sending some patches upstream prior to the new release.
