1. I was able to determine that, at least for me, dpkg-source cannot
be used in the source dir, it must be called from the source tree's
parent directory. (I did try the updated dpkg package and it helped
find the error.)

2. Additionally, after getting 1 above sorted out, it seems the debian
dir in  the source tree cannot be a sim link.
