It doesn't smell good to me. Ideally the upstream build system should
figure out itself where's what. But then maybe fighting with the build
system is not worth the effort.
If you decide to go the --with-boost-libdir route, please remember about
this part of dpkg-architecture(1) manual page:
“The environment variables set by dpkg-architecture are passed to
debian/rules as make variables (see make documentation). However, you
should not rely on them, as this breaks manual invocation of the
script. Instead, you should always initialize them using
dpkg-architecture with the -q option.”
