Binary-only uploads are not going away. The bug is already two years old, and the comment here is "you have to build it for yourself *at the moment*, sorry" [1]. "Moment" seems to be an euphemism for "forever", however... The bug survived at least already one major Debian release. Since non-free build dependency is one of the major reasons for a package to go into debian/contrib, I would think this should be solved at some point? I would gladly help here; however I am quite a strawman on this topic. How is this handled with non-free packages? Someone suggested that one could put the package to non-free to get this solved?
