I intended, just remove the DH_COMPAT line from d/rules, instead of just
commenting it out. Sorry for being unclear…
Actually leave a note in d/changelog for it. If I were you I'd write
something like
* debian/compat: create and set to 9, instead of using DH_COMPAT.
