Thanks for the hints, Peter.
The Q2700 I have is the only mips box I have - can I cross compile a
new kernel from an intel machine? Thanks to Martin's work I expect that
I now have "the rest" of the distribution to hand ... (and I wiped the
old Cobalt Linux off the drive - I suppose I could download a restore
ISO, but I'm not in a hurry to do that)

I'm afraid I have to report the same results as Jim. CoLo loads the
kernel, then the machine hangs displaying "Loading Debian".

Anyway, does anybody have hints what could be in the kernel that
causes
it to hang?
has anyone made any progress in this area?
One other thing that people might be missing. Your kernel probably
needs
to be built without 8250 serial support (CONFIG_SERIAL_8250 under 2.6).
