On my R4600 Indy, I find it stutters if I start a build whilst playing MP3s, otherwise, the audio output is quite stable. Perhaps using an alternate audio player might do the trick? I've been using XMMS on this machine with great success. I don't however, recommend mpg123, as its sound output plugin seems to be a bit on the scratchy side. MPlayer probably isn't the best choice on MIPS, as it lacks many of the assembly routines used on other architectures such as Intel x86. It is also a much more complex player, and so that in itself is a recipe for more problems. ;-) # apt-get install xmms <-- I'd give that a go. Not sure what else you'll need (I haven't used Debian/MIPS in quite a while) but there would be a start. dselect/aptitude/synaptic should have some packages there to do what you want.
