Please try the 2.4.27 from unstable (http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/k/kernel-patch-2.4.27-mips/kernel-image-2.4.27-r5k-cobalt_2.4.27-11.040815-1_mipsel.deb), and tell me if it improves the situation.
