This message is not strictly MIPS related, but I know there are many people working on small-memory systems here, including at least Tomasz on WL-500gD and Martin on the BCM947xx port. I'm playing with a WGT634U myself.
Anyway. I've been looking at dpkg memory usage and made a few patches which seem to make a huge difference on my system (32MB memory). Bugs 395140 and 397121 have the details. If anyone wants to try my patches on small i386 or mipsel systems, I've also made .deb's available at http://people.zoy.org/~walken/dpkg-patches/ Hope this helps. Please send me feedback if you try these changes.
